MSDS Information

General

Synonyms: trioxygen
Comment: Ozone is found in the atmosphere in varying proportions as it is produced continuously in the outer layers of the atmosphere by the action of solar UV radiation on oxygen in the air. It is also formed locally in the air from lightning and from electrical sparks. In the upper atmosphere it inhibits penetration of UV radiation and so is beneficial to life. At ground level it is a harmful pollutant because of the damage it can cause to lungs and to a wide range of materials.

Explosion limits:
Autoignition temperature:

Stability               Unstable - may decompose spontaneously and violently to oxygen. Mixtures containing a moderate partial pressure of ozone, and pure ozone at even low pressures are both potentially explosive. May react very violently with combustible materials and reducing agents, such as organics. Even small quantities of organic material, such as traces of grease inside a vacuum line, may be sufficient to trigger explosive reaction. This material represents a serious explosion hazard.

Toxicology          Toxic by inhalation. Respiratory and skin irritant. Experimental neoplastigen.

Transport information   Special regulations will apply.

Personal protection       Safety glasses or full-face protection, good ventilation. Special precautions must be taken to protect against explosion if vapour-phase ozone is used pure, if its partial pressure is significant, or if liquid ozone is to be prepared. Ozone is highly unstable and can explode with little provocation.
